Currently Uninsured

If you are currently uninsured, you may have certain options available to you very soon and others available in future years - at the latest, starting in 2014:

  • Medicaid eligibility will be expanding and made consistent across all states by January 2014. At that time, if your income is below 133% of the official Federal Poverty Level, you may qualify for coverage. See Eligible for Medicaid for more information.

  • If you have a preexisting health condition and have been uninsured for at least six months, you may qualify for coverage through a state or the federal high risk pool, effective July 1, 2010. (Some states are not setting up such pools and instead will fall back on a federal high risk pool.) For now, high risk pools still require you to pay the coverage premiums.

  • If you do not have coverage from another source (e.g., from an employer or Medicaid) by 2014, then you would be able to elect a plan with guaranteed coverage through a state “health exchange.” You could qualify for subsidies from the federal government to help pay for the cost, if your income is less than 400% of the Federal Poverty Level at that time.

  • If you are currently uninsured and work for a small employer (with 25 or fewer full-time equivalent employees), your employer may qualify now for tax credits to help pay for coverage.

  • If you are under age 26, still covered by a parent’s group health plan, and not eligible for coverage under a plan from your own employer, then as of the plan’s next plan anniversary (beginning on or after September 23, 2010), you may be eligible to stay on that plan up to age 26. Some employers are voluntarily electing to extend this coverage now, well before that next plan anniversary - so have your parent check with his or her employer.
